Professor Pigliucci one of the texts on Stoicism that I have read over the years is philosopher Tom Morris’ The Stoic Art of Living: Inner Resilience and Outer Results. I have enjoyed the work and found it to be very helpful to me as novice Stoic. In Chapter 16 of the work titled: Noble Extremes, Dr. Morris makes a number of criticisms of Epictetus’ thought. His argument is that Epictetus asserts goals and actions that are not obtainable for most individuals based upon humankinds’ history and modern social and cognitive psychology. I would be interested in your opinion regarding Dr. Morris’ criticism of Epictetus.
